Make an image background transparent
Create a PNG whose invisible alpha channel lets your subject sit naturally on a new page, color, or design.

JPG, PNG, or WebP · up to 20 MBSome apps display transparency as a checkerboard; the checkerboard is a preview and is not added to your downloaded image.
How transparent pixels work
PNG stores opacity in an alpha channel. Fully transparent background pixels reveal whatever is behind the image, while partially transparent edge pixels preserve smoother curves and fine detail.
Why the download is PNG
Standard JPEG does not support transparency. PNG is widely supported and preserves crisp edges without introducing new lossy compression around the cutout.
- Use PNG for transparent output
- Keep the untouched original
- Preview over several background colors
Where transparency helps
Transparent cutouts are useful in presentations, shop listings, profile graphics, thumbnails, print layouts, and brand templates. The destination app must support PNG alpha for the transparency to remain visible.
Good to know
Is the checkerboard part of my image?
No. It is a conventional preview showing which areas are transparent.
Why not download a JPEG?
JPEG has no alpha channel, so transparent areas would be filled with a solid color.
Can every app keep transparency?
Most modern editors do, but some upload services flatten transparent images. Confirm the destination supports PNG alpha.
